on my day off/ lunching at L’abbuffata

labbuffata1 Taking pictures of our food is never classed as work in my book and it always feels wonderful to arrange lunch dates with my bestie, spending this “very-rare” quality time together, share new experiences, appetisers and our pasta!

 L’abbuffata, located in a splendid, historic 1928 building in Piraeus area, is a “ristorante italiano” and a Heaven on Earth for my hungry tummy and my hungry eye. Despoina, the owner, has been treating her guests as if they were a bunch of friends, eating and tasting her miracles in the large dining room of her own house. Here originality, quality and passion are three terms that meet together in every dish from this undoubtedly delicious menu.

Upon your arrival you’ll find your coffee served in the privé, cosy and colourful sitting room. A vase filled with alstroemeria flowers creates the perfect welcoming scenery in this homey space. Enjoy a couple of bites of the homemade spoon-sweets during your chit-chat at the floral sofa before you head to your table.

The most fresh local and Italian ingredients are the core part into Despoina’s kitchen. Take your seat, wear your bib and wait to be served! The bread is kneaded and baked daily. It comes hot out of the oven, accompanied by olives and a Roquefort spread.

As for the appetisers you have to try the fried eggs with salsiccia, a savoury Italian sausage, served in a large sizzling pan. All you have to do, is dig into with a slice of bread on hand. Licking your fingers after every bite is a must for this tasting procedure.

When it come to the main dishes, we ordered the new entries from the spring menu! Don’t miss the Cacio e Pepe with fresh pasta and a Pecorino Romano cheese with pear. Freshly cracked black pepper and Pecorino Romano, two humble ingredients that so often play supporting roles is a yummy combination and Despoina knows exactly how to create the ideal balance in this plate!

 If you want something more spicy but totally aromatic you have to try the Aglio, Olio, e Peperoncino spaghetti. Simple but delicious, enclosing all the flavours of Italy.

A great choice for the seafood lovers is the Linguini Alle Vongole. The briny juices from the fresh clams enrich the flavour in this brothy sauce.

To accompany your wine during or after your meal, feel free and help yourself from the cheese bar. Pecorino Romano flavoured with pear,fig or wine and Parmiginao are excellently combined with her homemade mustarda di fruti. What we really love in this restaurant is that everything feels like home, the atmosphere is so relaxed and comfy and Despoina works very hard with her skills and her heart to satisfy every guest and every palate in the room.

 Thanks to her inexcusable imagination, the desert list is huge! Depending on the day, you can find from panna cotta, italian cannolis, torta di mele, to cappuccino cream, strawberry ricotta with almond spongecake and chocolate budino. You won’t leave L’abbuffata without tasting her notorious limoncello that she prepares all by herself with lemons, arriving straight from Italy. And now we would like to check your pulse! Tempted?
