Lianka Karmi and Leonidas Mavrakis had always wanted to open a small restaurant featuring the food from their childhood memories. Their dreams and goals were accomplished in Nonna, a charming place with character located in Monastiraki Area.
”Nonna means grandmother and the word has it origins to Zakythos Island. We named our restaurant after our grandmothers because every nona in the world will always pose the are-you-hungry question willing to cater for your empty stomach. Whenever the response is positive she will invent a delish and healthy dish using wisely they ingredients that currently lay in her fridge and cupboards.”
Nonna is designed to feel really cozy and homey so does her food. “Our menu offers the classic comfort dishes slightly transformed and a mid modernised, along with three or four dishes that change daily depending on our mood and on the fresh supplies we find at the local market. We also serve homemade desserts either prepared by us or by our mothers and grandmothers.”
Nonna’s wine is organic and comes straight from Euboea Island. You can pair your dish with a glass of red wine (Agioritiko with Merlot) , rosé (Sauvingon Blanc with Agioritiko) or white (Malagousia with Sauvingon Blanc).
not in an wine mood? choose between a herbal infusion, a cup of tea or a homemade lemonade. don’t miss the honey cocoa and locust bean beverage and any of their freshly vegetable and fruit smoothies to fit your detox plan or to boost your energy during the day.
Nonna’s soundtrack varies from jazz, blues, 50′s and rock n’ roll sounds. If you find your spot near the wide windows there is no returning back to the real world.
While Leonidas was making lunch preparations in the kitchen, my lens stole a couple of Lianka’s fire red smiles. We will be back for a tempting lunch break and that happy expression for sure. An empty belly fills up with love and Nonna does love you!
